The Pride of Edinburgh – Freddie and Sheila Buchanan
Two of Edinburgh’s foster carers, Sheila and Freddie Buchanan, were awarded the highest accolade at the first Evening News Pride of Edinburgh Awards on Friday evening.
The Pride of Edinburgh Award, which recognises individuals who have done something truly remarkable, was presented to Sheila and Freddie to celebrate their hard work and commitment to foster care in Edinburgh over thirty years. They received a standing ovation as they went on stage to collect their award.
Sheila and Freddie have been foster carers for almost thirty years and during that time have fostered around 80 of the city’s most vulnerable teenagers. Speaking after winning the award, Freddie said
I would recommend foster caring to anyone. You have to have a sense of humour but the thing you really need above all is patience.
We had further success at the awards as Katie MacLennan, a Drama Teacher at Wester Hailes Education Centre, won the Teacher of the Year Award and Jessica Dineley, who attends Braidburn School, won Student of the Year.
Congratulations go to all Edinburgh’s winners and shortlisted entries – a huge achievement for everyone involved.
